Methods Used to Fade Acne Scars

There are many types of acne scars and to get rid of each type of scarring a different treatment is required. Chemical peels, punch treatment, dermabrasion, and laser resurfacing are some of the most common treatments used to get rid of acne scars. In addition to these some rub-on treatments are also available on the market. Regular use of these ointments and creams can help in getting rid of scars.

The kind of treatment to choose for acne scars not only depends on the type of scarring you have but also your budget. Some of the above mentioned treatments are quite expensive and not everyone can afford them. Furthermore, they require multiple sessions to completely get rid of acne scars which could become even more costly.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are very effective as they serve to remove the dead cells from outer skin layer along with scars and blemishes. They cost around $700 to $800. The most common chemicals used in this process are phenol, trichloroacetic acid and alphahydroxy acids. People consider chemical peels for many reasons including treatment of sun-damaged skin, acne scars, wrinkles and pigment problems.

Punch Treatment

Punch treatment is a surgical procedure and is commonly used for the removal of deep acne scars. The procedure uses a tool that removes the scar from the skin. Since the process is highly painful it is normally done under local anesthesia. Punch treatment can cost you around $100 to $200.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure in which an abrasive disk is used to remove the outer layer of skin. This is also a painful process and requires anesthetizing of skin before application. Microdermabrasion is somewhat similar to this process but it’s less severe and makes use of zinc oxide or aluminum oxide crystals to remove the outer layer of skin.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is also similar to dermabrasion, the only difference is that it uses laser beam to remove skin surface instead of abrasive disks. Both these procedures are quite costly. Dermabrasion costs around $1500 to $2000 per treatment and laser resurfacing costs up to $2500 and even more for a single session.
