Different Types of Acne

There are many types of acne and different treatments have been prescribed by doctors for different acne types. Before choosing the best solution for acne it is strongly advised that you learn more about these types.

The most common type of acne is known as pimples in simple terms. However, pimples themselves can be of many types, namely blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, macules, nodules and cysts. Here I will explain these types briefly and suggest a treatment for each one of them.

  • Whiteheads:

Whiteheads occur when skin pores are blocked due to bacteria, hairs, and dead cells inside the skin. The pore is completely blocked and cause slight inflammation. Whiteheads should not be squeezed or plucked. They need physical treatment by a dermatologist or skin specialist. It is important to remember that if whiteheads are left untreated for long durations of time, they may develop into painful cysts.
  • Blackheads:

Blackheads are similar to whiteheads; the only difference is that they result from partially opened and blocked pores due to dust or bacteria. Both whiteheads and blackheads fall in the category of acne known as comedo in medical terms. These types of acne can be cured by using topical medication containing Salicyclic acid, Azelaic acid, Retinoids and Benzoyl peroxide.
  • Papules:

Papules are commonly known as red bumps which are fragile and irritating and they mainly occur due to some internal condition. Squeezing a papule may cause permanent scarring. Papules are best treated by applying topical or rub-on treatments, but they can also be cured effectively with the help of Zeno Acne Clearing Device
  • Pustules:

Pustules are the most common types of pimples which are formed due to dead skin cells, bacteria and some internal health condition. They contain pus and are painful and may leave scars or acne spots behind if squeezed. Zeno Acne Clearing Device is the most suitable and effective treatment for this type of acne.
  • Macules:

Macules are only temporary red spots left by healing pimples, especially pustules. They can be treated by using topical, oral and even thermal acne treatment.
  • Nodules:

Nodules are like papules but are more severe type of acne and may cause inflammation and other skin conditions if left untreated. Nodules are painful and it is advised to check with a skin specialist before choosing a treatment for nodules.
  • Cysts:

Cysts or cystic acne are one of the most painful types of acne and contain pus-like liquid consisting of dead cells and bacteria. They are larger in size than pustules and spread to the entire affected area in a matter of days. Oral pills and antibiotics are usually recommended for the treatment of this type of acne.
