What is Blue Light Acne Treatment?

Blue and red light therapy has recently gained increased popularity in the context of acne treatment and skin healing. But what is blue light acne treatment? Is it the same as laser or thermal acne treatment? These and some other questions regarding this technological breakthrough will be answered in this article.

Light therapy including blue and red light therapy is not like laser treatment but both are somewhat similar techniques. The most noticeable difference between the two procedures is that light therapy products are easily available on the market and they can be used at home. On the other hand, laser treatment has to be carried out in a clinic by an expert.

It has long been known that sunlight kills bacteria present in the skin and cures acne if the skin is exposed to sunlight for long durations of time. Blue light acne treatment works in a similar manner. The procedure starts by simply exposing the skin to strong LED bulbs for 10 to 15 minutes daily for at least 3 months. Visible improvement in the texture of the skin and its overall appearance will be noticed after 4 weeks of regular treatments.

Blue light has a short wavelength that goes to the root of a pimple and kills bacteria that causes it. Continued exposure to this light cures acne completely. This kind of therapy is not limited to blue light acne treatment. Blue light is also effective for the treatment of sleep disorders, depression, jaundice and jet lags.

Blue light acne treatment is better than laser acne treatment in my opinion because of a few reasons. First, it is very inexpensive as compared to laser therapy which requires multiple sessions to completely cure acne and other skin problems. Secondly, blue light therapy causes minimal pain and almost no discomfort. On the other hand, laser is highly painful and often results in redness of skin and other side effects.

While blue light acne treatment can be applied at home, there are some precautions that you must follow. Do not use blue light therapy if your skin is photosensitive. High intensity light is damaging to the eyes and therefore you should always wear protective glasses during treatment. Blue light therapy can darken your skin tone especially if you are Asian.

Other than light therapy, thermal acne treatment is also gaining widespread popularity. This treatment can also be applied at home by using an electronic device like Zeno Acne Clearing Device. These treatments have been found to be more effective than topical and oral acne treatments and they have negligible side effects.
